Make a Feeding Table for Vaname DOC Shrimp More Than 30

One easy way to manage DOC > 30 shrimp feeding is to make a vaname shrimp feeding table, or a shrimp feeding program which is usually carried out based on anco and net sampling. Read more here!

Explanation of the Shrimp Feed Program

The vannamei shrimp feed program is the first step to determine the type, size, frequency and total feed requirements in aquaculture. The purpose of making a feed program is for the management of feeding to suit the needs of the shrimp, so that the growth of the shrimp becomes more optimal, it does not occur overfeeding, and feed costs become more economical.

Shrimp feed program is divided into 2, namely DOC <30 with the method Blind Feeding (Blind Feeding) and DOC > 30 by method Demand Feeding using tables Feeding Rate (FR) or Feed Index. You can read the method feed program Blind Feeding for DOC < 30 here: Vaname Shrimp Blind Feeding Program at DOC 0-30.

As for the DOC > 30 shrimp feed program and how to make a feeding table, you can read the explanation below.

Stages of Determining DOC Feed Program > 30

Determination of the DOC feed program > 30 is divided into 2 stages, namely:

1. Planning the Amount of Feed Based on Estimates

Planning the amount of feed based on this estimate is determined by the information ABW/MBW (average shrimp weight per day), SR (shrimp survival), and biomass (average weight of shrimp in the pond) obtained through sampling once every 1 (one) week . This amount of feed is made for feeding for the next 7 (seven) days or until the next sampling schedule.

Determination of feed based on this estimate using the method Demand Feeding, which is divided into 2 (two), namely:

  • FR Table (feeding rate

FR is the determination of feed based on the FR% table. As for how to determine the FR, that is by matching the ABW/MBW results of the shrimp (from sampling) with the ABW/MBW in the FR% table.

  • Feed index

Feed index is the determination of feed based on the index value. The feed index value can be obtained from 2 (two) times the ADG target (shrimp growth target in 1 day) desired by the Farmers.

2. Determination of Feed Amount Based on Shrimp Appetite

After having planned the amount of feed based on estimates for the next 7 days, the next step is to adjust it to the shrimp feed needs every day which is seen based on the shrimp appetite.

Shrimp appetite will be monitored continuously through anco sampling after feeding hours to determine the amount of feed at the next feeding hour. How to provide feed based on anco sampling is determined by how much remaining feed is in the anco.

Calculating DOC Shrimp Feed Needs > 30

Calculating feed requirements is done to determine the amount of feed given for 1 (one) day or usually referred to as feed/day (P/H) or feeds per day (F/D). The method for calculating vannamei shrimp feed DOC > 30 is divided into 2 stages, namely:

1. The first stage, the amount of feed based on estimates

As previously mentioned, this estimated amount of feed will be used for the next 7 days. Determination of the amount of feed based on this estimate using the method Demand Feeding, which is divided into 2 ways, namely tables Feeding Rate (FR) or Feed Index. Farmers have the freedom to choose which method.

a. Determination of Feed Amount with FR Table (Feeding Rate

Feeding with the FR Table is the calculation of the amount of feed based on the weight of the shrimp by multiplying ABW/MBW by %FR. The following is an example of making a shrimp feed table or shrimp feed program per day using the FR table in an intensive aquaculture system:

Is known:

In sampling 3, DOC 44 obtained:

  • ABW/MBW (average weight of shrimp in 1 (one) plot) = 6.14 gram/head
  • ADG target (target increase in shrimp weight in one day. ADG target is determined based on the target to be achieved by farmers) = 0.21 kg
  • SR (shrimp survival rate which is the percentage of the shrimp population divided by the number of fry stocked) = 97%
  • Residual population (remaining prawns in 1 plot) = 97,000 heads
  • Biomass (total weight of shrimp in 1 plot) = 595 kg

To get the amount of feed per day, it is necessary to use the formula for calculating vannamei shrimp feed through the P/H or F/D formula. The formula is as follows:

rumus pakan per hari udang dengan tabel fr
Source: eFishery

Example on DOC 44:

Biomass: 595 kg

ABW/MBW = 6.14 grams/bird

FR% = 4.78% (based on FR% table)

Count:

Feed/Day = Biomass x FR%

= 595 kg x 4,78%

= 28.46 kg

So, the feed per day for vannamei shrimp at DOC 44 is 28.46 kg.

To facilitate division based on the frequency of feeding, it can be calculated by:

For example, the frequency of feeding = 5 times a day

Feed/feed hour = Feed per day / frequency of feeding.

= 28.46 kg / 5

= 5.69 kg

So, the amount of feed given in 1 hour of feed is 5.69 kg at DOC 44.

b. Determination of Feed Amount with Feed Index

Feeding with Feed Index is a calculation of the amount of feed based on the age of the shrimp (DOC) multiplied by the index value. The feed index value is easier to obtain from 2 (two) times the ADG target (target shrimp weight gain in one day). The following is an example of determining the amount of shrimp feed or shrimp feed program per day using the Feed Index in an intensive aquaculture system:

rumus pakan per hari udang dengan indeks pakan
Source: eFishery

Example:

DOC (shrimp age) = 44

Total stocking of shrimp = 100,000 heads

Target ADG = 0.21

Feed index (2 times the ADG value) = 2 x 0.21 (target ADG) = 0.42

Count:

Feed/day (kg) = (DOC x number of fry x index%)/1000

                     = (44 x 100,000 x 0.42%)/1,000

                     = 18.48 kg

So, feed/day on DOC 44 with a spread of 100,000 is 18.48 kg. For complete information about the Feed Index, you can read it here: Apply Shrimp Feed Index for More Optimal Cultivation!

2. Second Stage, Amount of Feed Based on Shrimp Appetite

After getting the feed per day (P/H), the next step is to adjust it to the shrimp's appetite. Calculation of feed based on shrimp appetite is carried out by sampling anco every 1-2 hours after feeding.

Anco sampling was carried out by providing feed in the anco after stocking the feed in the first feed hour. The amount of feed given to anco is 0.5–1.0 % of the shrimp's body weight.

The determination of the amount of feed based on anco sampling is done by looking at the remaining feed at the anco control time. Here's the table:

penentuan jumlah pakan berdasarkan sampling anco
Source: Iskandar, et al., 2022

Example:

Farmers determine the frequency of feed per day as much as 5 times or 5 hours of feed. The amount of feed in each feed hour will be determined by the results of the remaining feed in the anco. For example, the amount of feed per hour in DOC 44 is 5.69 kg, then the feed stocked in the first feed is 5.69 kg. Then anco control will be carried out 1-2 hours after the first hour of feeding.

After controlling the anco, the remaining feed in the anco was 25% (from the feed given to the anco). According to the table above, the shrimp feed dose is reduced by 10% in the second feed hour.

= 10% x 5.69 kg (feed per day)

= 0.569 kg

So, the feed that was reduced in the second feed hour was as much as 0.569 kg.

So the amount of feed given in the second feed hour, ie

= 5.69 kg – 0.569 kg

= 5.121 kg

So, the feed given in the second feed is 5.121 kg.

Then, anco sampling was carried out again for the amount of feed at the third feed hour. For example the feed in anco runs out, then according to the table above, the feed given is in accordance with the feed program. But, because the amount of feed in the second feed hour changes to 5.121 kg, then the feed in the third hour will be given as much as 5.121 kg.

This calculation applies to the fourth and fifth feed hours.

Things to Look For When Making DOC > 30 Shrimp Feeding Tables

In making the feeding table for DOC > 30 based on anco and nets sampling, you need to pay attention to the following points:

  1. Farmers can choose to use the FR table method or Feed Index according to pond conditions. To get the best results, you can use the calculations of the two to make comparisons which method is suitable for use in ponds.
  2. It should be noted that the concept of how to determine the amount of feed with the FR Table focuses on the ABW/MBW of shrimp, while the Feed Index focuses on DOC.
  3. Farmers must determine the target ADG according to the conditions of the shrimp pond, so they can provide the right amount of shrimp feed.
  4. If for example using the FR table method, take the %FR that is appropriate or closest to the ABW/MBW number in your reference FR table.
  5. You need to remember to always do anco sampling to check shrimp appetite at every shrimp feed hour so you can adjust the shrimp feed program based on appetite. In addition, the results of anco sampling can be used as an evaluation of SR (shrimp survival). If the feed in the anco is always running out, then most likely the SR number obtained is in accordance with the amount of feed given.
