Eel is a fish that has a long body shape like an eel with a triangular head. This fish lives in salt water and fresh water with low salinity. The habitat of eels is different from eels. Eels can live in mud with low oxygen levels.
The nutritional content of eel is very good for the health of the body, especially for brain function so that humans can slow down senility. For example, 100 grams of eel contains 1,337 mg of EPA and 820 mg of DHA, as well as 15,000 IU of vitamins. To cultivate eels, you need to pay attention to eel food. The following is information about eel feed.
Types of Eel Fish Feed
There are two types of eel feed, namely feed at the beginning of elver rearing and pellet feed. The form itself can be either natural feed or artificial feed.
One form of natural food is blood worms, insect larvae belonging to the Chironomus family. The Chironomus family is a type of insect or mosquito that doesn't bite and lives in free waters with a muddy or fine sand bottom surface.
The body of the blood worm consists of 90% water and 10% solids. The 10% solids contain good nutrition, including 62.5% protein and 10% fat.
The second type of eel food is pellet feed in the form of pasta. Generally, this pasta pellet feed will be given as a follow-up food for the eel seed enlargement process.
How to Make Your Own Eel Fish Feed
One of the natural food for eels is blood worms. Blood worms that are used as food for eels need to be frozen first.
The availability of blood worms is quite limited depending on natural situations, for example during floods or long dry spells. But there is no need to worry because many people cultivate blood worms.
Apart from blood worms, you can also use silk worms as food for eels. Before giving it to eels, silkworms should be cleaned first.
Apart from natural feed, you can also make your own eel feed. Artificial feed for eels is pellet paste feed, made from KRA3 which has been ground into pellet flour. Then, the pelleted flour is mixed with tapioca flour, CMC, and other nutritious ingredients.
After the pellet flour and tapioca have been mixed evenly, you can add CMC as a pasta maker, then stir until evenly distributed. Then, add other additional ingredients that are rich in good nutrition, such as protein, vitamins, and minerals.
After all these ingredients have been mixed, store the pasta pellets in the refrigerator so that they don't smell bad or unpleasant. If not immediately stored in the refrigerator, these pasta feed pellets have the potential to spoil because they are not dried in solid form.
Frequency of Feeding Eels
In addition to the nutritional content of eel feed, the frequency of feeding eels also needs attention. Feeding for eel seeds and adult eels is different.
For eels that are entering the enlargement stage, feeding is recommended 4 times a day. While in phase glass eels until elver/ eel seed, the frequency of feeding can reach 6 times a day with a feeding dose of 7-10% of body weight.
In detail, the dosage required for feeding eels depends on the phases. When the eels are in phase glass eels, giving the eel feed dose of 5% of body weight with a frequency of feeding 4 times, namely in the morning, afternoon, evening and night.
In phase elver until fingerlings, the feeding dose ranged from 2-3% of body weight with the same feeding frequency as the phase glass eels, that is, 4 times.
Especially for eels that are in the enlargement phase, you can feed eels as much as 2-3% of body weight if you use a pond eel cultivation measuring 3 x 3 m which has a weight of 100-200 kilograms. The frequency of feeding for eels in the enlargement stage is 3 times, namely in the morning, afternoon and evening.
Advantages of Using Homemade Eel Fish Feed
In all aquaculture sectors, providing feed is a necessity that requires a lot of production costs up to 80% or more of the total production costs. Especially if the feed needed is difficult to find, including eel food.
It's different if you make your own eel feed. You can reduce production costs, especially the cost of feeding eels, by 50-100%.
In 2015, for one kilogram of eel food that you made yourself, you only needed around Rp. 20,000 to Rp. 23,000. Whereas in the same year, the price of eel feed produced by the factory could reach Rp. 40,000 to Rp. 45,000. Pretty economical, right?
Eel Fish Feed Alternative
Another feed alternative that can be used when cultivating eels is fish pellets which can be found in many markets. However, you need to consider the right dosage and add complementary nutrition with additional protein, vitamins and minerals.
Adult eels require feed with a protein content of 40%, while eel seeds require a protein content of 45-55%. Eels also need food that contains amino acids in the form of linoleic and linolenic acids.
