Feed additives has a major role in increasing feed efficiency and making feed conversion ratio (FCR) low in shrimp farming. Feed additives can be in the form of nutritional and non-nutritive ingredients which are given by mixing when making feed.
Feed additives added according to a specific purpose in small, large, or combinations to improve the quality of the shrimp until harvest. Besides that, feed additives can maintain the physical and chemical quality of feed to maintain the quality of the aquatic environment.
Types Feed Additives
Types feed additives used in shrimp feed additives are binders, vitamins, amino acids, antioxidants, enzymes, antibiotics, minerals, and acidifiers. Feed additives has been shown to be effective in increasing Survival Rate (SR) shrimp under the situation of exposure to pathogenic bacteria. Feed additives can be classified into two, namely:
1. Nutritive feed additives
Nutritive feed additives is the addition of raw materials to the ration (staple food given during the day and night) to increase the nutrient content of the ration, such as vitamins, amino acids, and minerals.
2. Non-Nutritive Feed Additives
Non-nutritive feed additive is the addition of raw materials to feed that does not affect the nutrient content of the ration.
The function of ration nutrients depends on the type, such as increasing palatability (color and flavor), feed preservatives (antioxidants), inhibitors of pathogenic microorganisms, and digestive aids to increase nutrient digestibility (acidifier and enzymes).
