What is Shrimp Eye Ablation?

Ablation is a technique to speed up the process of maturation of the gonads (reproductive glands) by utilizing the hormonal system in the shrimp's body. Ablation is done by cutting one or both eye stalks to accelerate the process of molting and spawning of shrimp.

In simple terms, ablation is done by removing organ X that produces gonadal inhibiting hormone which is located on the stalk of the eye. This will trigger the work of organ Y as a hormone producer that stimulates the development of the ovary Gonad Stimulating Hormone (GSH). When the action of GSH is optimal, GSH will stimulate gonadal development continuously.

Shrimp Eye Ablation Techniques

To prevent the death of shrimp due to stress, ablation needs to be done using a good and correct technique or method. Following are some of the techniques commonly used in the shrimp eye ablation process:

• Pinches. Technique pinching done by clamping one of the eye stalks of the shrimp without heating and not breaking up.
• Ligation. Slightly different technique pinching, technique ligation done by clamping one of the eye stalks of the shrimp by heating and not breaking.
• Cautery. This technique is done by squeezing the eye stalk of the shrimp until it breaks.
• Cutting. As the name implies, to perform shrimp ablation using techniques cutting, You need to cut the eye stalks of the prawns with scissors until they break.

Even though the above technique seems easy to do, you still need professional help. If you do the ablation yourself, especially for the first time, it is feared that the shrimp will experience stress due to an accidental mistake.

Shrimp Eye Ablation Method

Prior to ablation, the selected broodstock must go through a preparatory stage. In the preparation stage, provide fresh food in the form of sea worms and squid for 1 full week to the brood shrimp.

Make sure you have prepared all the tools and materials needed during the ablation process, such as maintenance tubs, scissors, iodine solution, gas burners, and eye base barriers. If these tools are available, do the following shrimp eye ablation method:

1. Fill the maintenance bath with 15 liters of water, then add 1 ml of iodine. Stir the water and iodine thoroughly and then soak the scissors in the solution.
2. After that, prepare the gas burner and heat the scissors.
3. Dip the female shrimp in the iodine solution provided, then place a border between the bases of her eyes.
4. Next, cut the right eye of the female shrimp using scissors.
5. After cutting is complete, place the female shrimp in the iodine solution again, then put them back into their rearing area.

After the ablation process is complete, you are advised to give 1 kg/200 heads of marine worm shrimp. Not all female shrimp brooders successfully go through the ablation process.

Usually the things that hinder the ablation process are the condition of the burner gas that is not suitable for use, the presence of mixed male shrimp, aggressive shrimp movements, and the tips of the scissors that are not hot. Therefore, you must really pay attention to all aspects.
