How to Cultivate Goldfish

1. Pool Preparation

In general, goldfish cultivators cultivate carp in earthen ponds, jetted water ponds, and KJA (Floating Net Cage). Usually, goldfish ponds have a depth of 120 cm with a width of 7 x 10 m. Before filling with water, it is best if the pool is drained for 1 day for cement pools and 5-7 days for earthen pools. This is done to ensure the pool is clean from disease and parasites. 

In the pond preparation stage, another thing that you should pay attention to is the provision of natural food by growing plankton and algae in the pond. You can add organic fertilizer or manure so that plankton and algae can live in the pond.

The stability of the bottom soil pH of the pond is no less important at this stage. To fix this, sprinkle 100-300 kg/ha of quicklime (CaO) or 500-1000 kg/ha of agricultural lime for a pH of 6.

After that, fill the pond with water up to 15 cm and if the water turns green, it means algae and plankton have grown.

2. Selection and Spread of Seeds

In order for goldfish to grow healthily and of good quality, you are advised to buy seeds that are already CPIB (Good Fish Hatchery Practices) and CBIB (Good Fish Farming Practices) certified.

For stocking, you can sow about 20 seeds per square meter. Spreading the seeds into the pond must use a container to avoid stress on the seedlings. It is better if the seeds are sown in the morning or evening when the water temperature is not too high.

3. Maintenance

After the fish seeds are scattered, the next is the fish rearing process. Give pellets with a mixture of probiotics or EM-4 and vitamins in the morning and evening. Make sure the pellets contain a minimum of 25% protein. The amount of sufficient feeding is around 3-5% of fish weight. If the pellets have a dense texture and are large in size, it's best to wet the pellets first before spreading them into the pond. To adjust the amount of feed given, weigh the carp every 2 weeks.

Apart from feed, you must also pay attention to the quality of the pond water. Dirty water will worsen fish health and harm your aquaculture business. Therefore, clean the pool water and make sure the oxygen supply in the pool is sufficient and consistent.

4. Harvest

If the fish weighs 300-400 grams per head, it is a sign that you are able to harvest fish. Generally goldfish need 2-3 months to reach that weight.

What you need to do before harvesting is to satisfy the fish for 24 hours so that the fish can survive when they are sent for sale. Harvest in the morning or evening by reducing the pool water to 20-30 cm. To avoid cuts and abrasions to the fish, harvest the fish carefully using a net or gutter.
