This is a Vaname Shrimp Nursery Method that Will Definitely Work!

Do you know what nursery is? Nursery is a method used to help the growth of shrimp larvae into fry that are ready for cultivation. Vaname shrimp nursery is useful for reducing fry stress levels when moving from the environment hatchery closed to open ponds. That way, their resistance to viruses and bacteria will increase.

Vaname shrimp is a shrimp whose original habitat is in brackish waters, so vannamei shrimp must be raised before being cultivated. This is so that the shrimp can adapt to pond water. Vaname shrimp nursery is also widely used by farmers because often shrimp that are not nursed have a short life span, only around 60 days with a weight of 10 grams.

With nursery, vannamei shrimp are expected to be more adaptable to the pond environment so as to increase their survival rate. If you have never done nursery before, learn how below!

Vaname Shrimp Nursery Method

1. Preparation of Nursery Media & Water Filling

The first stage is the preparation of nursery media and filling with water. In order for the nursery to be successful, you should use a pond made of cement with a rectangular shape. You are also advised to dull every corner of the pool to avoid adhering dirt and make it easier for water to circulate. Before use, the pool must be cleaned, dried, and installed an aeration system. The pool must also be installed blowers for the oxygen source.

For filling water, you should use sea water. Pools may only be filled with water after they are dry and installed. Water enters the pool through a pipe inlet by using a filter to filter out impurities that may still be in seawater. Larval rearing ponds that have been filled with seawater are then given sodium or EDTA (Ethylene Diamine Tetracetic Acid) as much as 10 ppm.

2. Release of fry

Newborn vannamei shrimp will develop into Nauplii, Zoea, Mysis, Post Larvae, Juvenil, and finally Adult Shrimp. In the nursery stage, the shrimp larvae that are spread into the pond are Nauplii larvae. Before being stocked, Nauplii must go through an acclimatization process for 15 minutes so they can adapt to the water temperature in the pond.

3. Feeding

At this stage, the things that must be considered are the type, dose, and frequency of feeding. The feed given can be in the form of natural feed and artificial feed. However, if the larvae are still Nauplii, you should not provide artificial feed. At the Nauplii stage, the larva has a food supply in the form of a yolk sac inside its body. Artificial feed is given when the larvae have become Zoea within 40 hours. The artificial feed given must be in the form of fine granules that can float in the water so that the larvae can eat it. Meanwhile, natural food in the form of phytoplankton may only be given up to the Mysis stage. Phytoplankton must be replaced with artemia when the larvae are in the stage Post Larvae. Each stage of the larva has a different feed dosage and depends on its size and health condition.

4. Water Management

At this stage, the water in the pond must be changed regularly because otherwise the water will contain leftover feed and faeces which will harm the larvae. Water exchange is carried out to maintain the condition of water parameters. The new water must have the same temperature, salinity and acidity (pH) to avoid stress to the larvae from sudden changes in parameters.

5. Harvest seeds

Harvesting is done if the fry have passed stress test, salinity stress test, disease free, and free from luminescent bacteria. Harvesting is done by reducing the amount of water in the pond. After that, install the net and open the pool water channel. The fry will be accommodated in the harvest nets that have been installed. If so, transfer the fry into a bucket filled with water and transport the fry to a temporary storage container with a temperature of 28 degrees Celsius. After this harvesting stage, the fry are ready to be cultivated by you in the pond.
